Good Dreams
Jason woke from a cold sweat. He looked around as he collected himself. The room was dark except for the T.V., boasting an amazing stain remover at a low volume. He looked over to see his girlfriend lying in the bed next to him. His heart soothed and his breathing slowed. Everything faded away as he smiled. This was the first time he had seen her asleep. He had “slept” with her, but for some reason the actual act being in bed with someone you love and knowing that you have all the time in the world is much more satisfying. After realizing that he had been staring for a while Jason reached for the clicker to turn off the T.V. He spotted the digital calendar that was on the nightstand next to the clicker.
He turned the T.V. off and rubbing both of his eyes flopped himself back onto the bed. Jason hated seeing the calendar. Every day that passed was another day closer that the deadline for his book drew. He stared at the sealing remembering what his publisher had told him.
“Common, Jason. You had one best seller I know you have another in ya.” Eventually over the months it became: “Jason, common you have to get on this. I can’t extend your deadline any longer. All you’ve given me is a few scribbles; an idea.” But Jason couldn’t think, his brain just didn’t work when he didn’t get enough sleep, and he hadn’t gotten a full nights rest in almost nine months. Every night is the same thing; he lies in bed, plagued with dreams of faceless people. Everyone he knows, he knows the people but their faces are not there. Their personality and livelihood stripped away. This one night, lying next to the one he loved, has been the longest he has slept since he finished his first book. Oh how he wishes that he had never written that book, never thought of the idea. Perhaps then he would be able to enjoy his slumber.
Jason took his hands off of his eyes and again looked over at Melissa, his girlfriend. Once again all thought of faceless people and book deadlines left his mind. He had never thought he could love someone so much. He had known her for almost half a year now, but they had only been dating for a little over a month. Jason reached out his hand to brush some of her flaxen hair from her face. She had herself curled up in a ball and was sleeping peacefully. He shifted over close and kissed her on the cheek.
“I love you,” he whispered. “I only wish I could show you how much you mean to me.” He pulled the cover up to her head, covering up the t-shirt she was wearing that displayed the cover of his best selling book “The Man Without a Face,” a Sci-fi horror novel that had accumulated quite a cult following. Movie plans had been in the making, but were eventually dropped once the book dropped out of the top twenty.
Jason sighed and kissed Melissa on the cheek again. He looked over at the e-calendar which read 1:45am. Once again he thought of his deadline and his stomach dropped. What he had given his publisher was nothing. Just some names and an idea he had, not even something he was working on. He thought to himself that he could never top “The Man Without a Face” and that maybe horror just won’t cut it anymore. Looking over at Melissa again he saw her angelic lashes moving so very little as her eyes moved in R.E.M. Jason could feel the bed slightly moving from her soft breathing. Maybe horror just isn’t for me, he thought.
Just then his eyes lit up. Jason quickly jumped out of bed, trying his best not to disturb his princess. He then tiptoed over to his computer and turned it on. After opening a new paper document he began to type away at the keyboard; never stopping until he felt the soothing hands of a woman on his shoulders.
“What are you writing?” she asked.
“Good dreams.” Was all he said.
this was a short story i wrote for some class. it gave me a good feeling, at the time it made me think of my gf. but i think it still has an effect because everyone can relate in one way or another.
